Anti-America rally held in Iran on US Election Day

Dozens of people rallied in front of the former US embassy in Iran on Tuesday to protest Washington's hostile policies, which are having a negative impact on the Iranian economy.

About 50 demonstrators gathered this year, after the large-scale rallies that are usually held in November were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rallies are held every year in Iran to mark the anniversary of the 1979 hostage crisis. That year, a group of students took diplomats captive at the US embassy for more than 400 days.

The incident led the United States to break off diplomatic ties with Iran's then newly established Islamic regime.

This year, demonstrators chanted "Death to the United States!" and burned US flags.

In 2018, the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew from Iran's nuclear deal with world powers and resumed economic sanctions against Tehran.

The sanctions prevent Iran from exporting crude oil. This has dealt a blow to the country's economy. Commodity prices in Iran have been soaring, due to a plunge in the value of the country's currency.

A 52-year-old man who took part in the rally accused the US of targeting Iranian crude oil and freezing Iranian funds. He said those actions are absolutely unforgivable.

Observers say the outcome of the US presidential election will affect the country's policies toward Iran. Democratic candidate Joe Biden has indicated that the US will return to the 2015 nuclear deal, if he is elected.
