Asian qualifiers for World Cup to move to 2021

13 Aug

Asian qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup scheduled to play this year will be shifted to next year, stated FIFA in its announcement yesterday.

Considering the current COVID-19 situation worldwide, FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have decided on 12 August that upcoming qualifying matches for World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, which were originally slated to take place in October and November 2020, will move to 2021, said the source with the FIFA.

Previously, Myanmar team's FIFA World Cup qualifiers matches were set to hold in October this year but football authorities from FIFA already decided all the world qualifiers to be postponed.

"With the aim of protecting the health and safety of all participants, FIFA and the AFC will continue to work together to closely monitor the situation in the region and to identify new dates for respective qualifying matches. Further details on the new dates for next round of qualifying matches of World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 will be announced in due course," a joint FIFA and AFC statement said.
