Attacks at US base in Afghanistan kill 2 civilians

Attacks near a US military base in Afghanistan have killed two civilians and injured scores of others.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility.

The Afghan interior ministry reported a car bomb attack on Wednesday near Bagram Air Field, on the outskirts of Kabul.

Some of the attackers barricaded themselves in a nearby medical facility that is under construction.

There were shootouts between the militants and US-led coalition forces.

The ministry says 76 people, including five coalition soldiers, are receiving hospital treatment.

US President Donald Trump made a surprise visit to the base on November 28, and celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with US troops.

Trump announced the resumption of peace talks with the Taliban during the visit.

They restarted earlier this month.

Observers say the Taliban's terrorism is seen as a display of its attack capability and an attempt to gain an edge in the peace negotiations with the US.
