India's COVID-19 tally reaches 9,139,865

India's COVID-19 tally reached 9,139,865 on Monday as 44,059 new cases were registered, according to the latest data from the health ministry.


According to the data, the death toll mounted to 133,738 as 511 COVID patients died since Sunday morning.


There are still 443,486 cases in the country, while 8,562,641 people have been discharged from hospitals after medical treatment, according to the ministry's latest data.


The federal government's focus has been on ramping up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country. Till Sunday, a total of 132,582,730 tests have been conducted, out of which 849,596 tests were conducted on Sunday alone, according to the figures released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday.


Meanwhile, the COVID vaccine Covaxin, which is being developed by India's biotechnology company Bharat Biotech International Limited, entered the third phase of trial on Friday.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting on Friday to review the country's vaccine strategy. He discussed crucial issues such as prioritization of sub-populations and tech platform for rolling out the vaccine once it is finally developed and tested.
