Kaleinaung sugarcane growers reap handsome profits

25 Jan

Growers in Kaleinaung town, Dawei District, Tanintharyi region said they are pleased with the good profits generated from growing sugarcane this year.

“Sugarcane is mostly grown in the rainy season. We don’t need to take care of sugarcane, like other crops. We don’t need to use fertilizers or provide treatment. All we need to do is weed out the rough sugarcane leaves,” said a local sugarcane grower.

Last year, a bundle of ten sugarcanes was fetching K2,000-2,500. This year, it is selling for K4,500-5,000. So, local growers said they are pleased with the doubling of profits.

“Only black sugarcanes are grown in Kaleinaung. Local farmers sell sugarcanes to cold drink shops in town. Some customers come to farms to buy sugarcanes,” said a local sugarcane grower. Sugarcane is mostly grown in Yaybone, Hizae, Mayanchaung, and Michaunghlaung villages in Kaleinaung Town.
