Rescuers can't reach volcano victims in NZ

Eight people remain unaccounted for on an island in New Zealand where a volcano erupted on Monday.

White Island is a major tourist spot.

Police say 47 people were there and in the surrounding areas at the time of the eruption.

They say six people were killed and eight others are missing.

Thirty people are being treated in hospitals for injuries.

Some of them are reported to be suffering from severe burns.

Flowers have been laid in front of a tourist boat moored at a quay where vessels depart for the island.

The boat is believed to have been at the isle when the volcano erupted.

Rising steam and smoke continued to be seen on Wednesday, two days after the eruption.

Police say it is impossible to approach the island, as the safety of individuals cannot be guaranteed.

Frustration is spreading among the rescuers.
