The fatality rate related to road accidents is reported the highest in Yangon Region between January and October 2020, according to the Road Transport Administration Department.
The traffic-related death tolls were registered at 496 in Yangon Region, with 1,902 injured. Nay Pyi Taw witnessed 138 deaths and 230 wounded. In the past ten months, 156 were killed, and 434 were wounded in Kachin State, while 31 deaths were reported in Kayah State with 85 suffering road accidents causalities (injuries). The traffic fatality rate stood at 124 (427 injured) in Kayin State, 36 (142 wounded) in Chin State, 379 (1,631 wounded) in Sagaing Region, 148 (673 wounded) in Taninthayi Region, 470 (2,495 injured) in Bago Region, 255 (1,670 wounded) in Magway Region, 467 (1,681 wounded) in Mandalay Region, 206 (1,097 wounded) in Mon State, 102 (226 injured) in Rakhine State, 401 (1,122 wounded) in Shan State and 250 (1,670 wounded) in Ayeyawady Region. Highway traffic accidents are reported 76 deaths and 390 injured. The total number of road accident fatality is 3,735 and 15,875 were injured.
A total of 1,075 road accidents were claimed across the country in January-October period, with 227 in Nay Pyi Taw, 335 in Kachin State, 52 in Kayah State, 289 in Kayin State, 95 in Chin State, 1,058 in Sagaing Region, 446 in Taninthayi Region, 1,618 in Bago Region, 970 in Magway Region, 1,236 in Mandalay Region, 707 in Mon State, 181 in Rakhine State, 1,580 in Yangon Region, 827 in Shan State, 982 in Ayeyawady and 354 in highway and its related roads.
This year, the death toll and injuries declined compared to the corresponding period in 2019. Last year, 4,387 were killed, and 20,884 were injured in 13,487 road accidents, RTAD’s traffic data showed. Over speeding is the leading cause of accidents on the country’s roads and expressways.
