UN report: N.Korea exported coal worth $370 mil.

A UN panel of experts says North Korea exported coal worth 370 million dollars last year in breach of a Security Council resolution.

The panel monitoring UN sanctions on North Korea presented a summary of its report to Security Council members on Monday.

It says the North exported 3.7 million tons of coal mainly through ship-to-ship transfers from January to September last year.

A resolution adopted in 2017 bars exports of coal to cut off Pyongyang's key source of foreign currency income.

The report says North Korea is also using ship-to-ship transfers to import refined petroleum products, in excess of the UN-imposed limit of half a million barrels per year.

It adds that some North Koreans continue to earn money abroad as athletes and doctors, although all foreign workers from the country were supposed to have been sent home by December last year.

The series of allegations raise questions over the enforcement of UN sanctions, which are aimed at denying funding for the North's nuclear and missile development programs.

The report is due to be released in March, after it gains approval from the Security Council.
