2 killed in torrential rain in N. Iraq

Two people were killed and more than 100 were rescued on Tuesday in a wave of torrential rain that hit the city of Duhok in the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.

Colonel Bewar Abdul Aziz, a media official at the Duhok Civil Defense Directorate, said in a statement that the heavy rains that fell on the city of Duhok on Monday night and Tuesday morning led to floods and torrents that swept some neighborhoods in the namesake provincial capital Duhok.

The torrents led to the death of two people, while the civil defense teams successfully evacuated more than 100 individuals who were trapped inside their cars or houses in the city, Abdul Aziz said.

He said that dozens of homes, shops, and cars were damaged by torrents, and dozens of people were displaced and evacuated to hotels and camps.

Due to the heavy rains, the authorities declared Wednesday a holiday for government institutions and schools, except for service departments such as civil defense, security, municipalities, and electricity, according to a statement by the provincial government. The statement called on citizens to stay indoors for their safety.
