ASEAN Social Welfare and Development Ministers hold virtual meeting

Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myint Aye attended the ASEAN Minister Meeting on Social Welfare and Development-AMMSWD, which was held online yesterday.


Lao’s Labour and Social Welfare Minister, in his capacity as chair of the meeting, said COVID-19 has greatly affected vulnerable groups in ASEAN region.


The minister also urged other member countries to accelerate social welfare programmes and services in the region, and shared good practices with other member countries.


Delegates from ASEAN Secretary-General Office discussed the impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable groups in ASEAN, and the countries’ responses.


Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye said during the COVID-19 crisis Myanmar was cooperating with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, social organizations and volunteers in response to COVID-19 leaving no one behind.


National Volunteers Steering Committee was formed on 15 April 2020 to protect children and women, provide psychological support to public, organize social and cash assistance programmes, educate the persons with disabilities about COVID-19, provide assistances for IDPs, and help the volunteers who are working on the COVID-19 prevention, control and treatment processes nationwide.


A joint statement on adequate protection of vulnerable groups including children, women, persons with disabilities, and elderly persons was also discussed and approved.—MNA
