This is the first time the highest-level advisory has been issued for all overseas travel.

Morrison also announced bans of non-essential gatherings of more than 100 people indoors and 500 people outdoors.

Australian officials are also advising its citizens already overseas who wish to return to the country to do so as soon as possible.

In a statement, they said this was due to the high risk of contracting the illness overseas, as well as uncertainty of international flight arrangements and foreign medical care capacity.

Australia has 454 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and five deaths.
