Be on alert for crimes, domestic violence during stay-at-home order

28 April

As the coronavirus pandemic throws all of our lives into upheaval, another scourge rears its ugly head – that of domestic violence.

Due to the enforcement of the Stay-At-Home rules, some day-to-day crimes such as burglaries have sharply decreased, but illegal online games, cybercrimes and domestic violence have increased.

At the same time, due to public fear and anxiety, food and medicine prices are trending upwards, with some protective items, such as masks, sanitizers and alcohol, disappearing from the market. Taking advantage of the situation, dishonest and greedy people are speculating in the market by selling products at higher prices than the street market.

Over the past few weeks, we have heard robbery and looting even in the day time and these incidents of violence have made the people concerned about their individual safety.

Sales of low-standard and fake medicines and medical equipment are becoming popular on online websites and communities, threatening the lives of the people.

Over the past several weeks, we have also heard of some robberies in the wake of the order which prohibits gatherings of five and above.

Hence, people are urged to take precautions against cybercrimes and be alert on possible violence and abuses.

If you are aware of any suspicious and dangerous situation, report it to the police.

At the same time, the incidents of domestic violence can go up for many of us, stress levels are high while stuck at homes due to the Stay-At-Home order. So many aspects of life are put on hold, but it is never acceptable to take it out on one’s spouse, children or dependents

Domestic violence is a reprehensible crime that has been the source of much tragedy and heartache in our society, and cannot be justified or explained away under any circumstances, period.

If you are in an abusive situation, it is important to seek whatever help you need to get out.

However, if serious, potentially life-threatening issues are happening, don’t let fears of the coronavirus stop you from taking action.

Call nearest police station. Contacting the police is the one way you can protect yourself from further abuse. Keep emergency and hotline numbers accessible.
