Building a better future for every child is of paramount importance

Every child in our country should have equal opportunities such as access to education and getting better protection.

It is not just our moral obligation to make sure children are safe and secure, but a legal one, too.

This year, the COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a child rights crisis. The costs of the pandemic for children are immediate and, if unaddressed, may last a lifetime.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the rules of the Child Rights Law and the National-level Child Protection Policy would be enacted in December 2020, following the new Child Right Law which was enacted on 23 July, 2019, to protect and promote the rights of children in Myanmar.

It reflects the efforts of the government to protect child rights in the interests of children despite challenges from the COVId-19 pandemic.

With the emergence of the rules and policy which is designed to guarantee equal rights and benefits for every child in different areas, every child in our country will have equal opportunities.

It is also necessary to have clear tasks for implementing the rules of the new Child Rights Law, which sets higher standards for safeguarding the rights of children in all circumstances, and these directives should be in line with the law.

We are confident that the ability of experts who make up the committee for writing the rules of the law would overcome possible challenges in their work through negotiation and coordination.

Though there are some obstacles for implementing the child rights due to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, we must take appropriate measures to prevent actions that damage children’s health, education, and psychological well-being as these will imperil the future of the country.

Meanwhile, global action is needed to ensure that the necessary financial and technical support is available to all countries. Monitoring and evaluation are crucial to determine the extent to which these prevention efforts are effectively delivered to all who need them.

Every child has the right to protection, health, education, and fair treatment.  As they are the future of our country, our children need to enjoy their rights, including security, development, and protections guaranteed by the Child Rights Law.

Building a better future for every child through better protection is of paramount importance.
