IOM: 4,500+ migrants dead or missing in 2018

The International Organization for Migration says more than 4,500 people are believed to have died or gone missing on migratory routes around the world in 2018.

The IOM released its report on missing migrants on Tuesday.

The report says at least 4,592 refugees and migrants died or disappeared during their journeys. The figure was down from more than 6,000 in 2017.

The organization attributes the drop to the declining number of people attempting to migrate.

The report also says that about half of these people, or 2,297, were among the tens of thousands of migrants heading from North Africa or the Middle East to Europe via the Mediterranean.

393 died on the border between the United States and Mexico.

In Europe, refugees and migrants, mainly from Africa, have been forced to remain on their ships for at least 2 weeks after Italy and Malta refused to accept them.

Last month, two children from Guatemala died while in the custody of US Border Patrol agents.
