Israel strikes Gaza in response to rocket attack

The Israeli military has launched air strikes in the Gaza strip, following a rocket attack near Tel Aviv that wounded seven people, including a 6-month-old infant. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened strong retaliation.

The Israeli military says the armed Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza, is responsible for the rocket attack. The military said on Monday that it had begun striking Hamas targets throughout the Gaza strip.

Authorities in Gaza say at least eight locations have been struck, including a facility used by Hamas's intelligence service. They say seven people have been wounded.

Hamas sources said late on Monday that they had agreed with Israel on a temporary ceasefire.
