The Agribusiness and Trade Division under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation reported that Myanmar brought in more than 6,900 vehicles, including 1,700 private vehicles, in the past eight months in the current financial year 2023- 2024 beginning 1 April.
The ministry’s report showed 1,784 private vehicles worth US$39.04 million, 54 buses worth $1.04 million, 865 trucks worth $13.12 million and 4,203 machinery worth $136.8 million between 1 April and 1 December this FY.
Additionally, imports of auto parts were estimated at $45.02 million then. Therefore, vehicle and automobile imports swelled to $235.02 million in the past eight months.
Myanmar imported 119 private vehicles ($2.95 million), 126 buses ($2.39 million), 577 trucks ($7.22 million), 1,386 machinery ($72.73 million) and auto parts worth $42.12 million in the corresponding period last FY, totaling $127.41 million.
This FY, the import quantity is up by 4,700 vehicles compared to the year-ago period. The import value of auto parts was also up by $107.61 million.
Under the 2024 vehicle import policy, 2019 will be the oldest model to be issued an import permit for public buses and commercial vehicles, and 2014, for machinery and ambulances, according to the Commerce Ministry. All imported vehicles except machinery must be left-hand driven under the 2023 vehicle import policy.
For non-commercial vehicles, the model year must be 2023 or later. Public service vehicles such as minibuses, city buses, express buses, and commercial trucks manufactured in 2020 and later can be imported. Moreover, fire trucks and ambulances manufactured in 2014 or later are allowed for import. The oldest model of machinery is set for 2014.
