The final report meeting for “Feasibility Study on the Central Backbone Expressway in Myanmar (Yangon-Mandalay Expressway and Yangon-Ngayokekaung Expressway)” jointly conducted by the Department of Highway of the Ministry of Construction and KOICA Myanmar Office was held yesterday morning via videoconferencing.
During the meeting, Union Minister for Construction U Han Zaw said that Myanmar wants to work together more closely with Korea in infrastructure investments. Currently, Myanmar and Republic of Korea are jointly carrying out Korea-Myanmar Friendship (Dala) Bridge Project in Yangon and Korea Myanmar Industrial Complex. The virtual meeting focused on the feasibility studies on upgrading Yangon-Mandalay Expressway and building Yangon-Ngayokekaung Expressway.
Yangon – Mandalay Expressway connects three main cities of Myanmar: Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay. The planned Yangon-Ngayokekaung Expressway will connect Yangon to the Ayeyawady coastal areas. The expressway is a part of the master plan of the “Arterial Road Network Development” of Myanmar. The two expressway projects have a crucial role in the socio-economic development of Myanmar.
The Union Minister said that feasibility studies are important to projects, and expressed thanks to relevant ministries, relevant officials, and those who actively cooperate in the feasibility studies. South Korean Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Lee Sang-hwa also delivered a speech in the meeting.
KOICA Myanmar Office’s Chief Representative Ms Lee Youn Soo explained the meeting, and expert Mr Tong Hyun Kim explained the final report for Yangon-Mandalay Expressway. Expert Mr Seong Yil Bae explained the final report for Yangon-Ngayokekaung Expressway.
Union Minister U Han Zaw delivered a concluding remark in the virtual meeting. The feasibility studies on upgrading Yangon-Mandalay Expressway and building Yangon-Ngayokekaung Expressway was begun in 2018.
