Philippines to ease coronavirus restrictions

The Philippine government says it will ease coronavirus lockdown measures for the capital Manila and six provinces from Monday, June 1.

In a televised address on Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte announced the plan for the capital and the surrounding six provinces.

Restrictions on outings will continue for people aged 20 or younger, and those aged 60 or older. But people in other age groups will be allowed to leave their homes.

Non-essential manufacturing and service businesses have been allowed to operate at only half of their usual capacity. But many will be able to fully resume operations from next week.

The Philippines has confirmed 15,588 coronavirus cases so far. Some experts have expressed concern about the government's decision, as the rate of increase in infections has yet to slow down.
