Six killed in factory blast in China

A massive explosion at a chemical plant in the Chinese coastal province of Jiangsu has killed six people and seriously injured 30 including schoolchildren.

 

China Central Television and other media outlets report that the blast occurred shortly before 3 p.m. local time on Thursday in Yancheng city.

 

A fire broke out at the factory after the explosion. The windows of nearby houses were blasted out.

An elementary school and a kindergarten are located about one kilometer from the site. One video posted online showed an injured child.

 

The cause of the explosion is still unknown. State-run media report that more than 900 emergency personnel are trying to put out the blaze and rescue injured people.
