Students take first day of 2020 matric exam in Insein Prison

EIGHTY-five inmates of Insein Prison participated in the 2020 matriculation examinations which began yesterday.

The inmates included 78 students from Insein Prison’s No.13 B.E.M.S. (Branch), two detainees, and five former inmates who returned to take the test at the prison’s examination centre.

The examinees were closely taught by graduated inmate headmasters and teachers who have teaching experience outside, as well as by the Insein Township Deputy Education Officer, teachers from government schools and volunteer educators.

Prison officials provided healtcare, free time for physical activities in the evening, and did not have the examinees carry out any other duties within the facility, which coordinates with the Ministry of Education to provide education to the inmates.

Insein Prison began organizing for inmates to take the matriculation examination in 2014 for two examinees. Since then, the facility has organized examination center for 7 inmates in 2015, 11 in 2016, 9 in 2017, 19 in 2018, and 52 in 2019, with 36 outstanding graduates in total.—Zaw Gyi (Translated by Zaw Htet Oo)
