Thailand extends state of emergency until June 30

The Thai government says it will again extend the nationwide state of emergency for another month, until the end of June.

Thailand introduced the measure in March. The government imposed a night-time curfew and banned most foreigners from entering the country.

The measure was extended last month and was due to expire on Sunday.

The country has reported a drop in the daily number of new cases of coronavirus infections since early this month, recording them in single digits or zero.

The Thai government has gradually eased restrictions on shop closures, saying that the spread of infection is being contained.

Some restaurants have resumed in-person dining and major commercial facilities have reopened.

Government officials say they decided to extend the emergency to contain the possible resurgence of coronavirus infections.

Data compiled by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States show that the number of cases in Thailand stands at 3,045, while the total of deaths was at 57.
