UN calls for aid for Yemen's coronavirus outbreak

3 June

The United Nations has called for increased support for Yemen, where the coronavirus could be spreading across the country amid prolonged civil war.

Concerns over the outbreak are mounting in Yemen as its health care system has been shattered by fighting between Saudi-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's government and Iran-backed Houthi insurgents.

The World Health Organization has reported 358 confirmed cases in the country, but with the country's insufficient testing capability, the actual number is believed to be much higher.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the urgent need in Yemen on Tuesday in an online conference.

He noted that the country faces shortages of testing devices and basic protective equipment.

In the conference, countries offered to provide a total of 1.35 billion dollars, including more than 41 million dollars from Japan.

But Yemen's anti-government forces are critical of the meeting, which was co-sponsored by their enemy -- Saudi Arabia.

With dim prospects of a ceasefire, concerns are growing about deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
