Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye attends coordination meeting for legal drafting on Child Rights Rules and Child Protection Policies

Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement held a coordination meeting with members of the Committee for the Legal Drafting on Child Rights Rules and members of the Committee for the Legal Drafting on Child Protection Policies through videoconferencing yesterday.


The meeting was attended by Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye with the Deputy Minister, the Permanent Secretary, Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General, members of the working committee for the Legal Drafting on Child Rights Rule and the Committee for the Legal Drafting on Child Protection Policies, national consultants and officials from the Ministry.


The Union Minister said that Myanmar became a member of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child-UNCRC in 1991 and signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography in 2019 and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflicts (CRC-OPAC). He added that the new Child Rights Law was enacted on 23 July 2019 in order to adapt the current situation and more in line with the provisions of the CRC.


He continued that the Committee for Legal Drafting on Child Protection Policies is also cooperating with UNICEF Myanmar and Child Frontier to draft a systematic policy in accordance with the Child Rights; the policy aims to develop a national-level child protection policy that is relevant to the current situation and also in line with international standards.


He called for the cooperation with civil society organizations and the need to protect children from violence, exploitation, indifference and misrepresentation and the need to systematic implementation of the Child Rights Rule and Child Protection Policies in order to effectively implement the Child Rights Law and the equal access of every child to other rights including the right to protection.


The Union Minister also urged to take the initiative and participate in the discussion for strong and weak points of the Child Right Rules and Child Protection Policies.


Afterwards, the Director-General of Social Welfare Departement, Chairman of the Committee for Legal Drafting on Child Rights Rule and Child Rights Policies explained the process of the legal drafting on rules and polices and the formation of the committee and attendees gave suggestions in their respective sectors.
