UNION MINISTER for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye visited Thanlyin Youth Training School (youth rehabilitation centre) in Yangon Region and Mawlamyine Youth Training School in Mon State, highlighting the importance of sports, music and reading for the training schools on 14 and 15 August respectively.
During his visit to Thanlyin Youth Training School and Mawlamyine Youth Training School, the headmasters and the teachers of the schools explained the matters related to the training schools.
The Union Minister said that a manual for the youth training schools should be written, and the manual should include detailed instructions and the roles and responsibilities of the teachers and other staff. He pointed out that the majority of the juvenile crimes are drug offences, theft and robbery. The main reasons for them committing those crimes are being an orphan, poor guidance, family problems, poverty and drug misuses, said the Union Minister. He also emphasized the importance of sports, music and reading for rehabilitation of underage boys. The Union Minister said that the boys will know and understand the current affairs and situations by reading newspapers and journals.
He continued that young volunteers can participate in rehabilitation of uvenile offenders. He suggested that the youth training schools should invite the collaboration of young members of the Myanmar Youth Affairs Committee because the schools do not have enough staff.
Similarly, the Deputy Minister U Soe Aung visited the Nget- Aw-San Youth Training School in Kawhmu Township in Yangon Region.
To look after children who need protection, and to rehabilitate juvenile offenders, the Department of Social Welfare is operating Thanlyin Youth Training School and Nget-Aw- San Youth Training School in Yangon Region, Mandalay Youth Training School in Mandalay Region and Mawlamyine Youth Training School in Mon State.
Currently, Nget-Aw-San Youth Training School has 607 underage children, Thanlyin Youth Training School has 505 children and Mawlamyine Training School has 244 children.
