US lawmakers urge Trump to sign HK bills

Members of the US Congress have urged President Donald Trump to sign bills to support human rights and democracy in Hong Kong.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, made the appeal at a news conference on Thursday.

Pelosi said the passage of the bills shows that the United States "stands on the side of freedom and justice.

" She added "America stands with freedom-loving people of Hong Kong."

Both the House and Senate have passed the bills intended to make sure Hong Kong retains a high degree of autonomy under the "one country two systems" principle.

The bills would also make it possible to impose sanctions on Chinese officials who violate human rights in Hong Kong.

The Chinese government has indicated that it will take retaliatory measures if the bills become law.

President Trump, who seeks to achieve results in trade talks with China, has not mentioned his position on the bills.

But US media outlets report that he is expected to sign the bills into law, as they have received overwhelming support from both chambers of Congress.
