US to limit travel from Brazil due to coronavirus

The United States says it will ban people from entering the country if they had been in Brazil in the last two weeks as coronavirus cases surge in the South American nation.

The entry restrictions will take effect from Thursday. They will not apply to US citizens or their families.

Brazil had over 347,000 coronavirus cases as of Sunday. More than 22,000 people have died, with about 1,000 deaths being reported daily.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been pushing to reopen the economy, but infections continue to spread rapidly, especially in crowded urban slums.

The US government also bans the entry of certain travelers from China, Iran, and Europe.

The Japanese government has suspended entry for travelers from Brazil since April 3.
