Weekly market update of dry groceries at Bayintnaung Commodity Wholesale Centre

For a week from 7 to 13 Feb­ruary 2024, the prices of black grams and pigeon peas drasti­cally dropped on 13 February, two days after market closure. The prices of onion and Shan garlic moved up. The wholesale reference price for palm oil was set lower this week.

 

Onion

Bayintnaung market saw a supply of 50,000 visses of onion on 10 February, and only some de­pots opened on Lunar New Year’s Day. There was a high influx of 330,000 visses of onions from var­ious regions on 13 February.

 

The wholesale prices stood at K1,400-K2,900 per viss depend­ing on the quality, size and pro­ducing areas (Seikphyu, Myittha and Myingyan) on 13 February.

 

The highest price in the Pa­kokku market was K2,050 per viss only with an entry of 17,000 visses of monsoon onions, while the onion fetched K1,950 per viss in maximum in Myingyan market that day, with the supply of 89,760 visses of onion that day.

 

Garlic

The garlic prices from Aung­ban, Shan State, touched a high of K16,000-K17,800 per viss depend­ing on varieties and qualities, whereas Kyukok garlic prices decreased to K8,900-K9,000 per viss on 13 February.

 

Chilli pepper

The wholesale prices of chil­li peppers were registered at K9,500-K11,500 per viss for long chilli pepper and Moehtaung va­riety on 13 February. The price of bell peppers was K15,800-K16,500 per viss.

 

Rice

The prices hit K86,000-90,000 per sack of non-premium mon­soon rice and K103,000-K105,000 per sack of Pawkywe variety on 13 February. Meanwhile, the new Pawsan rice of premium quality was worth K135,000-K166,000 per sack, depending on the pro­ducing areas (Pyapon, Myaung­mya, Shwebo). The glutinous rice fetched K100,000-K110,000 per sack.

 

Palm oil

For a week from 13 to 18 Feb­ruary 2023, the wholesale refer­ence price of Yangon Region was set lower a bit to K5,140 per viss compared to that of the previous week. The FOB price stood at $857.5 per tonne on 13 February.

 

Pulses

The prices of various pulses dipped at K3,195,000 per tonne of black gram (Fair Average Qual­ity/RC), K3,395,000 per tonne of black gram (Special Quality/RC), K3,977,000 per tonne of pigeon pea (red gram) RC, K4,500 per viss of green gram (Shwewah) and K6,375-K6,700 per viss of chickpea in Yangon’s wholesale markets on 13 February 2024.

 

Potato

Chinese potato price fetched K2,650-K2,750 per viss on 13 Feb­ruary, with 60,000 visses flowing into the market.— TWA/KK
