WHO: Summer's impact on coronavirus unknown

The World Health Organization says it is not known how higher temperatures will affect the coronavirus. It has called for social distancing and other antivirus measures to be maintained.

The WHO's top emergency expert, Michael Ryan, spoke at a news conference in Geneva on Wednesday.

He was asked about the impact of the arrival of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the south.

He said people "cannot rely on an expectation that the season or the temperature will be the answer" to the situation.

He stressed the need to continue measures to prevent infection, including social distancing and handwashing.

US President Donald Trump has indicated his country will withdraw from the WHO, claiming China has "total control" over the organization.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he and US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar discussed last week the handling of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Tedros said Azar assured him of continued US support, especially in the fight against Ebola. He said the WHO hopes to work with the United States to contain the Ebola outbreak.
