South Africa's president has declared that the country had entered a second wave of coronavirus infections and ordered the closure of some beaches for the holiday season.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday that the beaches will be closed until early January. He also extended the hours of a nighttime curfew and ordered restaurants and bars to close at 10 p.m.
The country is entering the summer holiday season and its beaches have been crowded with young people. The number of daily infections has been rising since the beginning of December.
Ramaphosa urged people to take full precautions, warning that the second wave could be more serious than the first.
The country reopened its borders in October for the first time in more than six months in order to restart its economy.
