France and Italy reported record daily numbers of coronavirus infections on Wednesday, as Europe struggles with a surge in cases believed to be fueled by the Omicron variant.
France had more than 332,000 new COVID-19 infections, while Italy confirmed more than 189,000.
The Italian government on Wednesday announced a measure making COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for people aged 50 or older from February 15.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the decision to require vaccination for those at more risk of hospitalization was made to reduce the pressure on hospitals, and to keep schools open and maintain business activities.
In Italy, vaccination is mandatory for school teachers and members of the military and police forces.
