Japan's health ministry says it confirmed 15,124 new coronavirus cases in Tokyo on Sunday, up 5,938 from a week ago.

The daily tally has marked a week-on-week increase for four straight days.

The ministry also reported 30 deaths in the capital.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines was at 54, down one from Saturday.

Nationwide, 190,538 new infections and 407 deaths were confirmed on Sunday.
