The Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Mandalay branch) is undertaking a swift renovation project to preserve the ancient pagodas and structures within the Inwa Ancient Cultural Zone in Mandalay Region.
The department is working on maintaining 11 stupas and temples, including prominent sites such as Myatheintan Pagoda, Shwezigon Pagoda, and Hteehlaingshin Pagoda, among others, situated within the zone.
The renovation initiatives encompass clearing overgrown shrubs and bushes surrounding these architectural marvels and implementing cleaning measures. Urgent repairs are essential for some of these pagodas, and dedicated efforts are ongoing to address these needs promptly.
Additionally, the department is actively repurposing the Vijjacarana Monastery, once the residence of the esteemed Bhamo Sayadaw, into a commemorative museum. To enrich this endeavour, the department is helping gather Buddha images, the monk’s statue, relics, titles, honours, notable works, and daily-use materials contributed by his followers from abroad. — ASH/NT
