Myanmar’s fishery prod­uct exports amounted to over US$518 million in the past nine months (April-December) of the current financial year 2023-2024, the Ministry of Commerce’s sta­tistics showed.

 

Myanmar shipped 345,000 tonnes of fishery products worth $518 million to exter­nal markets, with fish exports worth over $262 million, shrimp exports worth $32 million, and other fishery products worth $223.707 million.

 

Myanmar seaborne fish­ery product exports surpassed those at the border. Myanmar sends fish to neighbouring countries (China and Thailand) through Muse, Myawady, Ka­wthoung, Myeik, Maungtaw, Mawtaung, and Kenglat bor­der posts. They are conveyed to Japan, European countries, China, Thailand, and the re­gional countries via maritime channels.

 

More than 20 kinds of fish including hilsa, rohu, catfish, and seabass are delivered to foreign markets, according to the Myanmar Fisheries Feder­ation. At present, fishery export has yet to increase. The fishery export is regularly going yet the volume of fishery export is still lower than those recorded in the pre-pandemic periods.

 

Myanmar’s offshore fishing is found in the Rakhine, Mon, and Taninthayi states and, Ay­eyawady and Yangon regions. There are 480,000 fish and shrimp ponds in Myanmar, with over 120 cold storage facilities, the fish and shrimp farmers shared information. — TWA/KK
