Sweet potatoes distributed from Mandalay Region are be­ing transported across Myan­mar including Yangon Region and nationwide demand is high now.

This is sweet potato season and it is produced abundant­ly and there are three kinds of sweet potatoes — yellow sweet potato, and Kharkyat sweet po­tato and purple sweet potato, of which, Kharkyat sweet potato is the sweetest and the most-con­sumed.

From Mandalay, sweet po­tatoes are distributed to Yangon, Mawlamyine, Thaton, Thibaw, Myitkyina and Toungoo.

“There are non-stop orders. Sweet potato price falls slight­ly. The supply is abundant this month, so price falls gradually. Sweet potato is available in all seasons. We have to transport it to different cities – Yangon, Mawlamyine, Thaton, Thibaw, Myitkyina and Toungoo,” said Ma Phyu Phyu Win, a sweet po­tato wholesale and retail trader from Mandalay.

Sweet potato powder is also used as MSG substitute.

“Sweet potato is served in boiled or baked form. It is also used as supplement and sea­soning powder. Some use sweet potato powder in place of MSG for making fried chicken,” she said. — Thit Taw/ZS
