A sluice gate that can irrigate over 2500 acres of farmland is under construction near Dayzet Village in Thanlyan Township, Yangon Region, according to a source from the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

The aim of the sluice gate is to improve agriculture sector, protect nearby villages from flooding and utilize irrigation water beneficially. Commenting on the construction of the facility, U Maung Thein, a local farmer from Pharku Village said that some farmlands have been inundated by rising floodwaters from the Bago River, adding the sluice gate will prevent some farmlands from flooding in summer cultivation season. He also expressed words of thanks for giving compensation to farmers whose lands were included in the construction project.

The sluice gate is being built by the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department. Construction of the project began in January and is expected to be completed by April.—Thet Khaing
