THE irrigation water is distributed from the two main canals of Tabu Hla dam to 29,570 acres of summer paddy, the reliable fields of farmers, in Taikkyi of Yangon Region, according to Taikkyi District Department of Irrigation and Water Utilization Management.
The left and right canals of Tabu Hla dam started distributing irrigation water for summer paddy on 1 January, and the operation will continue until the end of April.
“We distributed water of Tabu Hla dam to 29,570 acres of summer paddy in Taikkyi, Okkan and Aphyauk townships in Taikkyi District. Our department’s main duties are flood prevention and irrigation water supply. The summer paddy cultivation rate increases year by year, and we can also supply enough water. Therefore, the socioeconomic status of farmers develops and the GDP of the country also grows. We are happy for it, and we accelerate the dam water irrigation maintenance to expand the summer paddy cultivation this year under the guidance of the regional government,” said U Tun Tun Oo, assistant director of the department.
A total of 201,000 acres of summer paddy have been targeted for Yangon Region. The region cultivated 250,896 acres of summer paddy last year, and it completed 207,287 acres until the first week of February this year. There were 29,174 acres of summer paddy in Taikkyi District last year, and the estimation is 29,570 acres this year.
Dams such as Tabu Hla, Paunglin, Lagunpyin, Mahuya, Ngamoeyeik, Kalihtaw, Taunglonemyaung, Bantbwaygon and Zarmaiinn irritate the summer paddy fields and supply water for Yangon Region.
Among the nine dams, Tabu Hla Dam boasts the highest water storage capacity at 197,600 acre-feet and provides the most irrigation water in the region.
In 17 townships of eight districts of the region, 90-day, Sin Thukha, Yadana Toe and glutinous rice are the most commonly grown varieties, whereas 15 types of summer paddy are cultivated. Meanwhile, the Tabu Hla Dam supplies water to 29,570 acres of summer paddy in the region. — Nyein Thu (MNA)/KTZH
