World Radio Day (WRD), proclaimed by UNESCO Member States in 2011 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/67/124) in 2012, is celebrated on 13 February. On this significant day, the world emphasizes the power of radio as a medium that fosters humanity’s diversity and provides a platform for democratic dialogue. Radio continues to be the most widely consumed medium globally, with its extensive reach enabling it to shape societies, reflect diverse voices, and create inclusive spaces for all.
Radio’s affordability and accessibility make it particularly valuable for connecting remote communities and vulnerable populations, offering a platform for public discourse regardless of educational background. Its role in emergency communication and disaster relief is indispensable. Historically, radio has helped improve youth’s physical and mental capacity, enabling them to shape their futures. In addition, various forms of radio devices have been instrumental in bridging distances and saving time and money through effective connections.
On World Radio Day 2025, the theme will focus on “Radio and Climate Change,” supporting radio stations in covering this pressing issue. Despite challenges such as reduced funding and staff cutbacks, radio stations must rely on diverse, credible sources to report on climate change. Broadcasters are encouraged to address climate scepticism, investigate greenwashing, explore ecological economics, and cover climate activism as well as obstacles to effective solutions.
Since its inception, radio and its devices have proven invaluable in connecting people across various situations. Different radio devices are useful for volunteers to carry out search and rescue operations, relief, and rehabilitation activities, saving lives and property of the residents in natural disasters and the aftermath of armed conflicts. With advanced technologies, applications, and accessories emerging continuously, it is important not to forget the societal benefits of radio.
