STATE Administration Council Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo addressed the first meeting of the Central Committee on Copyright held in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Speaking at the meeting, the Union minister, who is also chairman of the committee, said efforts are being made to establish an efficient and up-to-date copyright system that can support the socioeconomic development of the country. Among the four copyright laws enacted in 2019, the Trademark Law, the Industrial Design Law and the Copyright Law came into force in 2023, and the Patent Law in 2024. Moreover, a system to protect the copyright of entrepreneurs and inventors aiming to promote innovations and literature is also adopted like other regional countries and ASEAN countries. The currently-practised copyright system also needs to conform to international standards and also with the current situations for the political, economic and education sectors of the country.

The enforcement of an intellectual property protection system in the country will support the emergence of innovative and competitive government and private sectors and contribute to the economic growth of the country. Therefore, all should work together to develop this sector. Human resources play a key role in the economic development of respective countries where intellectual property rights are being adopted, so education programmes should be conducted for the students and young people to stimulate their passions, and the creations by universities and research departments are also being introduced with the MSME entrepreneurs. Therefore, the copyright system being established in the country should be an effective action for the whole nation.

The committee’s vice-chairman reported on the decisions made during the previous meeting and outlined the progress achieved.

Afterwards, the attendees coordinated the discussion, and the Union minister concluded the meeting. — MNA/KTZH
