Ngape, 19 March
Ngape Township, located in Minbu District of Magway Region, has successfully harvested 81 acres of peanuts planted during the winter crop season, with an average yield of 53.98 bushels per acre, according to the Ngape Township Agriculture Department.
A total of 172 acres of peanuts were planted in Ngape Township, including 96 acres of Tontani peanuts, 75 acres of Magway-16 peanuts, and one acre of Vietnamese peanuts during the winter crop season. Farmers began harvesting peanuts in January to make space for summer crops. As of now, 81 acres have been harvested, yielding an average of 53.98 bushels per acre.
“Local farmers are being educated on the importance of harvesting peanuts at the right time to prevent reduced yields and ensuring proper storage of the harvested peanuts,” said U Myint Thein, head of the Township Agriculture Department.
Field staff from the Township Agriculture Department have been assisting and educating farmers on the benefits of expanding the cultivation of high-yielding pure seeds, the systematic application of natural and chemical fertilizers, the use of natural pesticides, and the prevention and control of pests and diseases.
If peanut yields can be increased in areas beyond Ngape Township, it will not only help achieve local self-sufficiency in edible oil but also contribute to stabilizing commodity prices.—Ma Yu (Ngape)
