UNION Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win received Mr Tom Fletcher, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and his delegation yesterday morning at the ministry’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC), with relevant officials present.
During the meeting, the Union minister discussed the damage caused by the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, the presence of international rescue organizations in the affected areas for search and rescue, the ASEAN Disaster Emergency Logistic System for international earthquake response and relief supplies, and cooperation with UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations.
In exchanging views with the Union Minister, Mr Tom Fletcher stated that the United Nations has ample specialized staff ready to assist Myanmar, explaining that his visit aimed to know the situation firsthand and discuss the provision of necessary humanitarian assistance, which is currently being provided and will continue to be guided by humanitarian principles. — MNA/TH
