UNION Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettle­ment Dr Soe Win received Mr Tom Fletcher, the United Nations Under-Secretary-Gen­eral for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordi­nator, Office for the Coordina­tion of Humanitarian Affairs, and his delegation yesterday morning at the ministry’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC), with relevant officials present.

 

During the meeting, the Union minister discussed the damage caused by the magni­tude 7.7 earthquake, the pres­ence of international rescue organizations in the affected areas for search and rescue, the ASEAN Disaster Emer­gency Logistic System for international earthquake re­sponse and relief supplies, and cooperation with UN agencies and international non-govern­mental organizations.

 

In exchanging views with the Union Minister, Mr Tom Fletcher stated that the United Nations has ample specialized staff ready to assist Myanmar, explaining that his visit aimed to know the situation firsthand and discuss the provision of necessary humanitarian assis­tance, which is currently being provided and will continue to be guided by humanitarian principles. — MNA/TH
