ON behalf of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein signed the condolence book for the demise of General Khamtay Siphandone, former President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and former Chairman of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, who was a leading revolutionary figure in the country.
General Khamtay Siphandone passed away on 2 April 2025 in Vientiane. In tribute to his legacy, the condolence book was opened at the Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to Myanmar, located at A-1, Tawwin Road, Dagon Township, Yangon.
Chief Minister U Soe Thein, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, arrived at the Lao Embassy at 2 pm yesterday. He was welcomed by Lao Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Bounphieng Chanthavong, Lao Military Attaché Colonel Viphaxay Chathamath and other embassy officials.
The Chief Minister met cordially with the Ambassador, the Military Attaché and responsible officials in the embassy’s reception hall. During the meeting, he expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government of Myanmar for the demise of General Khamtay Siphandone — a distinguished former President, former Party Chairman and a key revolutionary leader of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
