SHWETAUNGSA Pagoda in Dawei, which is one of the city’s most revered religious sites, was bustling with merit-makers engaging in religious observances on the evening of 17 April, which marked the first day of the Myanmar New Year 1387 and an auspicious day for Theravada Buddhists.

Locals from Dawei and visiting pilgrims gathered at the pagoda to offer flowers, cool water and oil lamps, in a display of devotion marking the sacred day. Many also chanted Buddhist Suttas and recited protective verses while stringing prayer beads.

Later, worshippers performed traditional rituals such as pouring scented water at Bodhi trees and making heartfelt wishes, a gesture believed to bring blessings for the New Year. — Ngwe Zin Yaw (Dawei)/ KZL
