MOTHER Earth is the foundation of life for all living and non-living beings. Since time immemorial, humans have relied on the Earth for support, stability, and sustenance. Yet, few pause to express gratitude or consider how their actions impact the planet. While individuals benefit from Earth’s resources, their behaviours — whether intentional or not — often reflect ingratitude, particularly in how they treat the environment.
One of the most visible signs of this neglect is the careless disposal of waste. Pollution, especially plastic waste, continues to choke all oceans and poison ecosystems. Nature is clearly signalling distress — rising temperatures, frequent wildfires, destructive floods, and acidifying seas are all symptoms of human-induced climate change. These issues are further compounded by deforestation, unsustainable agriculture, land misuse, and illegal wildlife trade, all of which speed up environmental destruction.
Although individuals may believe their personal actions do not contribute to global disasters, the truth is that all actions are interconnected. Every small act of environmental harm contributes to a larger pattern that affects the balance of life on Mother Earth. Natural disasters, which people of all countries have witnessed globally, are often intensified by this web of human influence. However, with collective effort, these challenges are not insurmountable.
Restoring and protecting ecosystems is now more crucial than ever. Healthy ecosystems are vital—they provide clean air, freshwater, and food, and help regulate the climate. They also support biodiversity and act as natural buffers against environmental shocks. By restoring damaged ecosystems, we can help combat climate change, alleviate poverty, and prevent species extinction.
This International Mother Earth Day, the United Nations urges all global people to embrace a more sustainable way of living — one that benefits both people and the planet. The 2025 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, emphasizes the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy and tripling global clean energy production by 2030. It’s a rallying call for everyone to unite and take meaningful action.
The responsibility to protect Mother Earth lies with all of us. Through disciplined, environmentally conscious behaviour and participation in global restoration efforts, everybody can ensure the Earth’s durability for future generations. Now is the time to shift from reliance to responsibility, from consumption to conservation. Let’s stand together to heal and preserve the planet all living beings inhabit. They need to consider how to do a good deed in return for Mother Earth.
