ACCORDING to information from local growers and sellers, durians from Ye Township in Mon State are performing well, as they are fetching higher prices than last year.
Ye is a township located in the southern part of Mon State, known for its abundant fruit orchards and prominence in durian production. According to the Department of Settlement and Land Records, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, the durian plant cultivation area in Ye Township spans 2,344 acres, with an average yield of 2,478 fruits of durian per acre,resulting in a total yield of 5,808,432 durian fruits.
In Myanmar, durians from Ye Township in Mon State are renowned and are also cultivated in regions such as Kayin State, Shan State, and Taninthayi Region.
“Last year, durian fruits didn’t fetch good prices because the yield was high,” a durian grower from Ye Township said, adding that small durian fruits are fetching good prices this year.
Durian fruits from Ye Township are primarily sold in the domestic market and are purchased not only for consumption but also for making jam.
“Not many local fruits are exported overseas; most are sold domestically and supplied to Upper Myanmar,” he continued.
The durian season in Myanmar occurs in May, June, and July, and the trees are now in full bloom. — MT/TH
