We are marching towards our goal of setting up a democratic Union with a firm federal system. It has been seen that while some people support the transition, some do not understand it, while some are not interested in it.
Whether people show an interest in politics or not, political affairs have a direct impact on their lives. How? Politics concerns the affairs of a country and its people. It is not just the domain of political parties, or limited to winning elections.
Nowadays, the term ‘democracy’ implies a government elected by the majority of the people. In other words, it is a representative form of government. A representative democratic system gives importance to the will of the people. However, it is not perfect. People themselves are far from perfect. When people themselves are imperfect, what they create also cannot be entirely perfect. A renowned person once said a democratic system is not good, but other systems were worse.
A system that represents the people has to place emphasis on the will of the people. This needs to be noted, and importance needs to be given to the people’s will.
The members of the government and the public servants are also people. But they have been entrusted with the power to run the government machinery. It is for them to decide whether to use their power for the benefit of the country and the people, or their own selfish ends.
It would be a grave mistake if people in the government and the administrative machinery use their powers for personal gain.
Our country is now transitioning into a democracy. On the path to democracy, we will encounter both good and evil. There are many ways to root out evils such as corruption. The Anti-Corruption Department will investigate complaints, and preventive measures will be undertaken across the country to combat corruption. Corruption hampers national development and prosperity, and hurts national dignity. Corruption and malpractice also hurt the dignity of those involved in these practices.
As we move towards a democratic system, the authorities have a great opportunity to bring about great benefits for the country politically. Only through the correct use of this opportunity can there be development for all and the self.
Therefore, members of the government and public servants must not lose sight of the will of the people._GNLM
