ELECTRICITY generated by LNG-fired power plants will be distributed to Yangon Region during the coming summer, according to the Department of Thermal Power Plants under the Electric Power Generation Enterprise of the Ministry of Electric Power.
A responsible official from the department said that the Thanlyin and Thakayta LNG power plants will play a key role in supplying electricity to consumers in Yangon during the summer period. Electricity previously utilized elsewhere will be redistributed to the public, contributing to improved power availability. Furthermore, electricity generated by LNG plants will be delivered via dedicated lines to industrial zones, special economic zones and industrial enterprises on a 24-hour basis.
At present, the Thakayta and Thanlyin LNG-fired power plants in Yangon Region have been producing 500 megawatts of electricity since 14 January 2026. LNG carrier vessels are also expected to continue arriving throughout February.
The ministry stated that electricity generation declined by approximately 1,570 megawatts in 2025 due to the destruction of national grid transmission lines, natural disasters and a reduced gas supply from the Yadana offshore field.
As hydropower plants and solar power projects cannot be implemented within a short timeframe to meet nationwide electricity demand, LNG-fired power plants have been prioritized to enable electricity generation and distribution within a limited period ahead of the summer. — ASH/KZL
