UNION Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win visited Pekhon Township on 7 May and provided cash assistance and relief supplies to residents returning to their homes in Pekhon and Moebye townships.
During the visit, the Union minister paid homage to the Sayadaw of Thaddhamma Thaddhi Pariyatti Buddhism Learning Centre in Pekhon and donated offerings before meeting returning residents at the township hall.
Authorities provided K21.66 million in social assistance for elderly people aged over 75, children under five and pregnant women. In addition, rice assistance worth K130.4 million for one month was distributed to 1,816 households with a total population of 6,520 people. Relief items and tarpaulin bundles were also handed over to the returning residents.
The Union minister later met teachers at Basic Education High School No. 1 in Pekhon and coordinated necessary support measures. He also met doctors, nurses and healthcare staff at Pekhon People's Hospital and discussed requirements with relevant officials.
On the previous day, Dr Soe Win visited Nyaungshwe in Shan State to inspect the completion of prefabricated school buildings funded through donations from ASEAN countries via the AHA Centre as part of reconstruction efforts in Mandalay earthquake-affected areas. — MNA/KZL
