SCHOOL enrolments for the 2026-2027 Academic Year were made at 2,717 basic education schools, 231 monastic schools and 378 private schools in Yangon Region.

The school enrolment week was designated from 25 to 31 May, and the schools will be opened on 1 June. The Ministry of Education announced that no enrolment fees will be charged and that school uniforms, textbooks, exercise books, pencils, and pens will be provided free of charge at schools during enrolment. Free educational materials are being distributed to students from Grade-1 to Grade-12. The ministry also urged parents not to give money or gifts to headmasters, headmistresses, teachers, or staff. Placement Tests will also be conducted to help primary and high school level dropouts return to formal education.

“The free education system is being implemented to ensure that every school-age child can attend school, in line with the educational objective. During school enrolment, students are being admitted while receiving educational materials such as textbooks, notebooks, pens, pencils, and school uniforms free of charge. KG students are provided with age-appropriate learning aids, primary school students receive school uniforms and school supplies, while middle and high school students are provided with textbooks, exercise books, pens, and pencils. Even after the school enrolment week ends, enrolment will continue throughout June. In pursuant of the guidance of the government, all are working together to ensure that more students are enrolled this year compared to last year,” said U Min Oo, deputy director (Education) of the Yangon Region Education Office.

Daw Aye Mya Thida, teacher of No 1 BEHS Dagon, said, “In accordance with the instructions of the President and the Ministry of Education, teachers, departmental organizations, and associations are working together to ensure that all school-age children are enrolled. We invite all school-age children to come and enrol. Enrolment is now open from KG to Grade 12. Educational materials are also being provided free of charge during enrolment. Even if enrolment is delayed, applications will be reviewed and accepted continuously throughout June.”

In line with the motto of the 2026-2027 academic year, “Let’s Enrol All School-Age Children for Sustainable Development of the Country”, the regional administrative organizations, educational staff, social organizations, school welfare teams, volunteers and parents are cooperating to increase the number of enrolled students beyond last year’s figures. Last year, 1,173,347 students studied in schools across Yangon Region, and efforts are now being made from the beginning of this year’s enrolment period to increase school attendance compared to the previous year. — Nyein Thu (MNA)/KTZH
