Data compiled by NHK shows that, as of noon on Thursday, bear attacks have resulted in 25 injuries or deaths across at least nine of Japan's 47 prefectures since April. The Environment Ministry reports that four of the victims lost their lives.
On Tuesday, a 73-year-old woman was found dead in a mountain forest near her home in Akita City, northeastern Japan. Authorities determined that she had been killed by a bear based on an autopsy and the body's condition.
The ministry is urging people to carry radios or bells that frighten off bears, and to stay in groups when going out. It is also calling on people to intentionally make loud noises in areas with poor visibility and avoid leaving food waste that could attract bears.
The ministry is further advising people to check the latest information on bear sightings released by local governments.
