MYANMAR aims to adopt Good Agricultural Practices in durian farming, tapping into the foreign market through the Myanmar Durian Growers and Exporters Association.
“Durian is a potentially lucrative fruit. Durian demand from Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai is estimated at US$10 billion. Thailand’s durian export to these markets is 40 per cent, while Vietnam’s durian export accounts for 40 per cent. Malaysia holds 20 per cent of the market share. Therefore, we need to aim for export by leveraging value-added products and penetrate the Chinese market,” said an official of the association.
There are over 27,000 acres of durian farms across the country, primarily in Yangon Region, Mon State, Kayin State and Taninthayi Region.
Durian has high domestic consumption, and it is also in demand in China and Japan. Thus, the durian farming business is highly profitable with market potential. — ASH/KK
